Tips for buying maternity clothes
What you need to know
Maternity clothes have come a long way since the dated cotton tent dresses of yesteryear. Whether you’re looking for maternity workwear and tailored outfits, searching for maternity swimwear or need some maternity activewear, there’s plenty of options for sale.
Many high street or online brands offer maternity clothing, and there's some maternity clothing brands that cater just for pregnant women and expecting parents.
The design of maternity clothes can vary. For example, some maternity jeans may have a full elasticated band over your tummy and some may scoop under your bump. Others may have an elasticated waist and extra allowance around your tummy area. And some have a drawstring or stretchy panels to accommodate changes to your body from the first trimester to birth and beyond.
It may be a case of trying lots on before finding the right style to suit you and what feels comfortable through the trimesters of pregnancy.
Many tops, dresses, bras and vests are designed to work from pregnancy all the way through to breastfeeding. So if you’re hoping to breastfeed, then it may be worth buying some items for maternity and beyond. Even if they’re not specifically for breastfeeding, they may have buttons or zips in the right places.
Think about when you’ll be in the later stages of pregnancy and when your bump will be bigger. Will you need a winter coat, or will it be warmer weather and you can make do with your current jacket? If it's summer you may want maternity leggings and thinner dresses.
Planning a capsule maternity wardrobe with a few key essentials such as maternity leggings, jeans and a few dresses may be the way to go if you don’t want to splash out on a whole new wardrobe, which can be expensive.

- Price: £££
- Wide range of sizes from 6 – 24 (only some items in the plus sizes)
- Petite and long options available
- Skin-to-skin items available
Whether you want an everyday basic or something a bit special, Seraphine’s maternity range is a popular pick among BabyCentre parents-to-be.
Kate Middleton apparently wore their skinny jeans and maternity coats while pregnant. But it’s not only royalty who love what Seraphine has to offer. Their well-fitting clothes are a big part of the appeal. One mum-to-be said the Seraphine jeans just “fit so well”, which is especially important when your body is changing through pregnancy.
They aren’t the cheapest clothing range on the market, but the high quality shines through. Many items, such as the tops, bras or maternity dresses, all last during those early postnatal months, and some are also designed to work if you’re breastfeeding.
They also sell skin-to-skin clothing, designed so you can hold your little one close (with some items designed for men too).
BabyCentre parents say
"Seraphine for almost everything. They have a good range of smart and casual wear and the patterns are different to only having Breton stripes! The quality is great too."
"My favourite is Seraphine. More expensive but much higher quality and so many items double up for nursing. The hoodies with hidden zips are so soft and comfy."
"I love their long summer dresses and will carry on wearing them even next summer."
"The clothes are comfy for breastfeeding and they gives you a good shape. They have the best nursing bras too."

H&M is a popular choice among BabyCentre mums-to-be for everyday wear. The MAMA range offers a lot of key items for your wardrobe – leggings, knitwear, vests, jeans and tops – all in plain colours so they mix and match with everything.
If you need a go-to T-shirt then H&M is a good starting point. Not only that, but nothing in their MAMA range is going to cost very much either, with everything reasonably priced (including great sale items).
They always stock the classics too, so if you want maternity dungarees or a striped Breton top, then you’ll be able to find one in their range.
Another benefit of H&M is that many of their stores include the maternity range, so you can try on that jumper you've seen online before buying it.
BabyCentre parents say
"Good quality and they have sales quite often. I think I only paid full price for sweatpants (and it was worth it, they are my favourite and I still wear them). My only criticism is the small choice of colours."
"Good value for money, comfy, decent selection of clothes made with cotton only, as the other brands are usually overpriced and made with synthetic materials."
"I wore a lot of H&M maternity stuff. They're good for versatile basics. Baggy blouses, T-shirts and nursing base layers."
"I still wear almost all my maternity wear now, 10 months after having my baby, because they are so, so comfortable! Comfortable clothing, decent quality and their maternity tops were good for breastfeeding. They weren't obviously nursing tops, but still offered comfortable, discrete feeding for out and about."

If there’s one item you won’t regret buying it’s maternity leggings. Not only are they great through pregnancy, they’re perfect postpartum too – especially if you’ve had a c-section.
Our Community parents say the Lovall (formerly known as Love Leggings) are the best option you can choose. There are full length or crop and they’re sized as either petite, tall or regular. With so many options there really is one that will be your perfect match.
There’s also a wide variety of colours if you don’t just want black, and they even tell you what level of support the leggings will give you and how breathable they’ll be.
Many parents say they only buy the Lovall now – a brand which also offers jeans, trousers and tights in their maternity range!
BabyCentre parents say
