Terraria: Best Hooks In Terraria 1.4 (2024)

Hooks are an essential item in Terraria. From the starter Grappling Hook crafted with a lucky Hook drop to the insane Lunar Hook, it's hard to imagine Terraria without them. The Hook is really the first movement tool a player acquires and it's all up from there. Get it?

Here's a list of the very best Hooks in Terraria. Many late-game Hooks have unique uses that a clever player can experiment with, switching out with different Hooks for caving and boss fights.

9 Grappling Hook

Any list about Terraria Hooks has to pay homage to this, the original Hook, the Hook that started it all. Navigating caves with Ropes and Wooden Platforms gets tedious after a while, and new players beeline straight for a Grappling Hook as soon as they can.

Truth is, it's not simple to get a Grappling Hook. Without the Goblin Tinkerer NPC, who sells a Hook for two gold coins, the player has to farm Skeletons, Undead Miners, Hoplites, Undead Vikings, and Piranhas until a Hook drops. It has a 4% chance to drop and an even smaller chance to drop from Piranhas.

8 Ivy Whip

This is the next pre-Hardmode Hook players aim for. Crafted with 12 Jungle Spores and three Vines, players need to do a bit of farming in the Jungle to unlock the Ivy Whip. The Hook has a reach of 28 tiles and allows players to fire out three separate Hooks.

The Ivy Whip is great for building, caving, and taking down bosses. With the three-Hooks-in-one, players can suspend themselves in the air, a bit like Spiderman. Once all three Hooks are out, the player canfire another and it will get rid of the first Hook.

7 Bat Hook

This Hook is only available during the Halloween seasonal event (so you'll need to wait until October to get your hands on it). The Bat Hook is worth waiting for though, as it has the longest reach of any pre-Hardmode Hook.

It only allows one hook to be fired at a time, but because of its long reach and fast pulling speed, the Bat Hook is fantastic for traveling across the fields and mountains of Terraria. It's also pretty good for taking down bosses.

6 Dual Hook

This is the first Hook available in Hardmode and players can make the choice between using the Ivy Whip or the Dual Hook, as they both offer unique advantages. The Dual Hook allows the player to fire two Hooks simultaneously, with a greater reach and velocity than the Ivy Whip.

Of course, you lose out on the ability to suspend yourself in the air, but the rapid movement allowed by the Dual Hook makes it a top choice if you're trying to traverse landscapes and caves with speed. It works well in boss fights, too.

5 Hook Of Dissonance

This Hardmode grappling hook is dropped by the Queen Slime and is one of the more interesting Hooks in the late-game. It allows the player to teleport immediately to the Hook's location, preventing damage from being taken.

The Hook of Dissonance is a great tool to get out of tight spaces. Also, thanks to the fact that the retract time of the Hook is less than half of most other Hooks in the game, the player can move extremely fast if they get the technique right. It's a really fun hook to use.

4 Illuminant Hook

The Illuminant Hook is dropped by the Hallowed Mimic (those spooky chests with teeth) and is a pretty good Hook. It has a tile reach of 30 tiles and can fire three hooks, a bit like the Ivy Whip or the upgraded Thorn Hook dropped by Plantera.

Out of the Tier 6 Hooks, the Thorn Hook, Worm Hook, and Tendon Hook, the Illuminant Hook is the only one that offers a unique advantage: the Hooks emit light. This makes exploring new caves a bit easier.

3 Anti-Gravity Hook

The Anti-Gravity Hook is considered to be one of the best in the game. Its unique function allows players to hover in the air and move around a fixed point. This piece of Martian technology, dropped by Martians in the Invasion event, defies gravity.

With a reach of 31.5 blocks and a velocity of 14, it is not the fastest hook or the hook with the best reach, but if used correctly it can be one of the most overpowered tools in the game. Spin around a block in circles and you can circumnavigate a lot of damage, especially against Duke Fishron.

2 Static Hook

The Static Hook is available for the reasonable price of 50 coins from the Steampunker NPC. This one has a reach of 40 tiles, more than any other in the game, and is the top choice for players who love to build.

It allows the player to choose how far, or how close, they are to the latched point. This means you can hook up the side of a build and then extend yourself away, giving you more angles to place blocks and decorate your Terraria masterpiece.

1 Lunar Hook

Terraria: Best Hooks In Terraria 1.4 (9)

The Lunar Hook's tooltip reads: "You want the moon? Just grapple it and pull it down!" This makes sense because it's arguably the most powerful Hook in the game. Unlike any other Hook, the Lunar Hook allows the player to send out four Hooks simultaneously, as fast as they can hit the E key.

You can only craft the Lunar Hook after defeating the four pillars during the Lunar event: the Nebula pillar, the Solar pillar, the Stardust Pillar, and the Vortex Pillar. You need six fragments of each pillar. Once crafted, the Lunar Hook has all the colors of the pillars. It looks awesome.
