If this had ended at the exact 26-min mark it would be an absolute essential annual Halloween classic. Then the last 20 mins happened and the story literally goes from getting ready for a Halloween party to getting fucking chased down on a US military aircraft runway in what is like a fucking Resident Evil 6 Chris Redfield campaign set piece and I just couldn’t be more bored with what’s happening.

That animation is so stunning, even 20 years later. The fluidity of motion, the diversity of faces present, even among background characters, the subdued color palette reminiscent of eternal sunset, this movie is gorgeous. Some CG here and there doesn't look amazing, but it fits in well enough that it is never bothersome.
I really really enjoyed this. It's short and concise, with strong voice performances. The characters are all interesting enough, and the central plot and world building, while not super original, is perfectly executed and adapted onto the screen. The world is messy and ugly and gritty and I love it.
I just wish it was longer. I wanted more. It was so much fun, looked so good, and sounded so good. I am so pumped to check out the series, and I really am hoping it is similar in execution to this. If you like anime at all definitely watch this.

Anime Marches On! 2024
48 minutes of monster beatdowns. ‘Nuff said.
But seriously, this is a dope OVA that I’ve been meaning to watch for years. I’d seen the live-action adaptation (not good), but this is the real winner here.
A badass vampire with a sword infiltrates an American base during Halloween to kill some dastardly creatures of the night. And they don’t waste too much time either. There's a lot of visceral violence and action to be had.
The look of the Ova mirrors its atmosphere. Everything is moody, with lots of shadows and a grungy look to the surroundings. All the colors are muted except the very red blood that is spilled. It’s a visually distinct anime for…

Well, hi there.
Double feature time again on this Good Friday. This time I'm pairing this vampiric OVA with dystopian thriller Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999).
But for now, let's talk about the introduction of the iconic Blood Franchise.Vampire hunter Saya is the last of her kind. She works under the American government to rid the world of Chiropterans.
Well, not much to talk about as it's just under an hour but if you enjoy vampiric media, definitely check this out.
I love that Saya kills with a Katana, she is also very smart and resourceful. Lots of fun and now I want to dive into the rest of the world that is Blood.
I also enjoyed the gorgeous… -

Two vampires soundlessly communicate by mouthing words to each other and lip reading—I swear it’s the spookiest thing I’ve seen in a while. Had the same startled feeling watching HAL lip read the astronauts in 2001.
Unfortunately feels like a pilot episode, which it essentially was, at 45 minutes long. Bloodis sort of a Blade meets Blade Runnermashup, so I’m here for the 2009 live action movie, fingers crossed.
Match cut from a holy cross to an identically shaped military plane then cut to black is a nice touch.

Arguably of the same rarefied coolness as Blade (1998). Except only in microcosm. At a high school on Yokota Air Base in Japan, a new student arrives in time for the annual Halloween party...and vanquishing demons by katana. Fifty minutes doesn't allot time for depth, so Blood fills time with its title. Well, more accurately about half that duration halving beasts resembling hairless Howling werewolves.
The first half consists of groundwork riding on hope of future continuations to elaborate. Then battles awash in red across the military facility. A brisk story limited by seeming like a lengthy demo reel. A feeling compounded if this had outright bombed and been forgotten. Also an exasperated nurse caught in the middle deflates action somewhat and some English voice acting isn't so hot. Yet this has more coffee-tinted style, coming off fresh despite twenty plus years, than many features triple the length. Watched via Manga Entertainment's DVD.

Three Asian Films: (2/3)Back in the early 2000s, I remember when Blood: The Last Vampire was a big deal with anime and manga fans at the time. Manga Entertainment released it in theaters despite having a short run time and I remember James Cameron really liking it. I was lucky to see it on the big screen along with X: The Movie (1996) as a double feature at the time with my friends. As time went on, Blood: The Last Vampire has been forgotten and people only know about the spin-offs. The Blu-ray is out of print, but I'm lucky to still have my old DVD copy. After…

Review by MushiMinion ★★★
Production I.G. certainly delivers one of the prettiest vampire movies ever made, with ambiance rivaled only by Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, but there's not much substance behind that style. Coming in at well under an hour, Blood: The Last Vampire has just enough time for a brief introduction and then we're already right into the climax. At the beginning of the movie, Saya (our token last vampire) shows no concern with killing or saving humans, then at the end she kind of does. What we're missing is her forming a bond with either a student or the school nurse, who plays heavily in the last act, to show her growth as a character. That elusive half-hour of material is all…
